This June is Heroes Month and Portland Children's Museum is celebrating heroes of all ages and sizes. This month the Museum offers a variety of craft activities, storytimes, and outdoor activities about celebrating heroes and being your own.


SPECIAL EVENTS
 
Red Yarn: Folksongs & Puppetry for Families 
June 1, 11 a.m. in the Theater 
Red Yarn, Andy Furgeson, is a dynamic family performer and teaching artist in Portland, Oregon. He weaves folksongs and puppetry into engaging shows for all ages. With his energetic performances and lush recordings, Red Yarn reinvigorates American folklore for younger generations. 
 
Free Lead Testing Clinic 
June 1, 4–8 p.m. during Free First Friday 
Get your child tested for lead at no cost at the evening lead screening clinic, then stay to play at the Museum during Free First Friday. Children can be poisoned by lead but not look or act sick. A blood lead test is the only way to find out if a child has lead poisoning. Testing is also available for pregnant and lactating women. For children age 6 and under. No appointment needed.  
Sponsored by Multnomah County Health Department in partnership with Portland Children’s Museum. 
Cost: Lead testing and Museum admission is free. 
 
Micah & Me
June 8, 11 a.m. in the Theater 
Come dance and sing along with Micah & Me! Micah & Me host toddler dance parties regularly throughout the Portland Metro area and they have an uncommon ability to connect with those young at heart! 
 
Penny’s Puppets 
June 13, 11 a.m. in the Theater 
Join us for a joyful live performance that uses puppets, story, and song to ignite the imagination and fill the Theater will excitement and laughter. Penny’s Puppet Productions is a professional one-woman puppet company dedicated to making the world a better place, one puppet show at a time! 
 
Hillsboro Hops Mascot Barley: Meet & Greet 
June 16, 11 a.m. in the Theater  
Meet Barley, the Hillsboro Hops Mascot at Portland Children’s Museum! Come hangout with the two-time NWL Mascot of the Year Champion for a baseball-themed Storytime and playtime with Barley in your favorite Museum exhibits.  
 
Real Magic Episode Premiere 
June 18, 11 a.m. in the Theater 
Be the first to see the newest episode of Real Magic, created by local artists and educators Alex Kudroff and Lily Bry. This series features people and puppets, animation, song, and humor for all ages to enjoy.  
 
Little Bee Heroes with Bee & Bloom 
June 20, 11 a.m. in Outdoor Adventure
Discover the tiny heroes that fly around helping the planet everyday - bees! Learn about the amazing superpowers bees have, the good deeds they do in our gardens, and meet some friendly bees up close with Bee & Bloom.   

Clay Slip-and-Slide 
June 22, 10 a.m.–noon in Outdoor Adventure 
Come get messy and play with clay slip for a sensational sensory experience! Slip is a mixture of clay and lots of water. It’s fun to touch, squish, splash, and swirl. For this special event, we are moving the Clay Studio outdoors and making a giant batch of slip for a one-of-a-kind sensory play experience. Sensory play is important for child development and encourages children to explore and learn about the world around them through their senses. This sensory activity helps cognitive growth, language development, problem solving, and social interaction.   

Superhero Day! 
June 24, 11 a.m.–2 p.m. 
Send up the signal in the sky, it’s time for Superhero Celebration! Dust off your super costume and unite with other caped crusaders at the Museum. Meet out-of-this-world guests, Portland Superhero Coalition, and participate in a variety of fun activities to test your superhuman powers. Don't forget your camera; this will be an event to remember! 

Superhero Machine presented by Penny's Puppets
June 24, 11 a.m. in the Theater 
Super Donkey believes that everyone has a super hero inside of them waiting to be discovered. So he builds a machine to help them discover their superpowers. Watch out Super Donkey, Vinnie the Villain wants to steal the Super Hero Machine and make it his own! Come sing, laugh, and discover the surprise ending to this heroic tale. An original mini-musical puppet production by Penny’s Puppet Productions.  

Taco Dragon: Meet & Greet 
June 29–July 8 at select Storytimes  
Meet Taco Dragon from the hilarious best-selling books Dragons Love Tacos and Dragons Love Tacos 2 by award-winning team Adam Rubin and Daniel Salmieri. Did you know dragons love tacos? They love chicken tacos, beef tacos, great big tacos, and teeny tiny tacos. So if you want to lure a bunch of dragons to your party, you should definitely serve tacos. Buckets and buckets of tacos. Unfortunately, where there are tacos, there is also salsa. And if a dragon accidentally eats spicy salsa . . . oh, boy. You’re in red-hot trouble! Join us for a lively Storytime with Taco Dragon!

Hero Masks 
9 a.m.–5 p.m. at the Box Office 
Be a hero to Portland Children’s Museum and make a donation that directly benefits our Access Programs. As a thank you, you’ll get a fun superhero mask you can decorate! 
 
Storytime 
11 a.m. & 2 p.m. in the Treehouse  
Gather round for Storytime at Portland Children’s Museum. Storytime features children’s books enjoyed by children of all ages and their caregivers read aloud by Museum Staff. Not only is Storytime fun, reading aloud with children enhances their language proficiency, communication, and listening skills. Reading stories out loud together can also help children create real world connections, prepare them for academic success, and support their imagination and creativity.  
 
Butterfly Painting Metamorphosis 
10 a.m. – 4 p.m. in Outdoor Adventure 
Head to Outdoor Adventure and help us paint our family of giant butterflies!  
 
Mud Kitchen 
9 a.m.–4:45 p.m. in Outdoor Adventure  
Cook up some messy fun in our outdoor kitchen! We invite you to measure, pour, slice, squish, and play with dirt, water, and our favorite tools from the kitchen. Sensory play supports language development, fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction. 


SUNDAYS 

Advanced Tool Time 
10 a.m.–4 p.m. in the Maker Studio  
Learn to safely use saws, drills, and other exciting tools to design and build your own projects from recycled materials. Join us for advanced tinkering and building activities facilitated by our Maker Space Specialist, Mike. All ages are welcome!  
 
Cape Making 
10 a.m.–noon in East Studio 
The signal is in the sky! Come create your own personalized superhero cape with Leslie and Maddy, then go forth and do great deeds! *$5 fee for materials. 
 
Guardians of the Garden Tour 
2 p.m. in Zany Maze 
Learn about the plants and flowers growing in our new garden and listen to some favorite garden stories with Jered. Take a tour of the garden to visit the fruits and veggies, smell different herbs and flowers, touch some extra soft plants, and listen to the bees in our Bee Hotel for a complete sensory experience.

After glazing, the Museum fires your ceramic piece in our kiln, which causes the glazes to harden and change color so they are darker, brighter, and very shiny. If you are glazing your own creation, the cost to glaze will be the same cost as it was to fire. Glazed pieces are available for pick up one week after creation.

Join Amy for a morning of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) for little ones. This program features hands-on activities to help develop skills in pre-writing, sorting, counting, matching, and measuring.  

Hero Buttons 
12:30–2:30 p.m. in the Wonder Corner 
Join Emlyn to make a dazzling button with a hero-emblem of your own design. Sketch your ideas, then transform your design into a badge of courage and kindness. Wear your button proudly or make one to give to a hero in your life.  


WEDNESDAYS 
 
Super Senses Mystery Boxes 
10:30–11:30 a.m. in the Field Station  
Use your super senses to explore a variety of textures in our sensory boxes with Meg. Hone your intuitive powers to sleuth the mysteries inside each box.  
 
Colorful Heroes: Adventures with Paper 
1:30–3 p.m. in the Wonder Corner  
Use your imagination to create a spectacular superhero out of paper shapes with Sky. Add moveable features and color with watercolor pencils to complete your hero.  


THURSDAYS 

Gentle Music for Babies and Pre-toddlers with Mr. Ben 
10–11 a.m. in the Treehouse  
Music is magic for children’s cognitive development, lighting up different regions of their rapidly developing brains in ways that nothing else does. Partnering with the Portland Children’s museum, Mr. Ben brings his music directly to the younger set. His songs and the energy of the show are geared towards babies in arms, pre-toddlers, and children of any age that engage with calmer energy.  
Artist Bio: Often credited with being one of the pioneers of Portland's burgeoning kindie music scene, Mr. Ben remains a staple and a favorite of any child who’s seen him perform. He performs music with the intention of entertaining kids and their grownups, making sure that everyone can enjoy the experience together.

Create beautiful prints with Rabia using gel printing plates. We’ll play with stencils and stamps, colorful paints, and a variety of textured paper to pull amazing prints. Feeling inspired? Transform your print into a bookmark, card, or journal to give as a gift to someone marvelous in your life.

Let your imagination run wild as you create your own comic! Learn about the different parts of a comic from comic artist Liz Yerby and get inspired by her favorite comic book characters.

Super Bubbles 
10–11:30 a.m. in Outdoor Adventure 
Have you ever been inside a giant bubble? Here is your chance! Come play with bubbles of all shapes and sizes and learn from Zac how to make different kinds of bubble wands. 
 
Dino Dig 
2–3:30 p.m. in Outdoor Adventure 
Grab your explorer’s hat and come hunt for dinosaur bones in the Dig Pit of Outdoor Adventure!
