Create, play, and discover this winter with Early Explorers at Portland Children’s Museum. This five-week series will provide young learners and their adults with a unique Museum experience filled with fun.

We hear it all the time: adults who visit the Museum with children want to come back with just their friends! Well, now you have a chance to be a part of the excitement.

Water Works will be closed for repair and maintenance from Tuesday, January 22 through Saturday, January 26 and will reopen on Sunday, January 27. Thank you for your understanding!

When Portland Children’s Museum moved to its current location from Lair Hill in SW Portland, designers from Nike donated their time and RTC Industries donated the fabrication of what has become a Washington Park landmark. The Thinga-ma-greeter has delighted children and families for more than 15 years with its turning gears, fanciful fish, and “CM2” that stood for Children’s Museum Second Generation.

Sadly, the Thinga-ma-greeter has corroded to the point of being inoperable and beyond repair. We’re concerned this could lead to it becoming dangerous in the future. On January 18, the sculpture will be professionally removed by a contracted demolition company, and guests might see some of the action if they visit today.
The Museum will save the fish at the top and reinstall it in nearby Zany Maze. We say goodbye to the sculpture with gratitude to our friends at Nike and RTC Industries, and in tribute to the more than 4.8 million visitors who have passed by and played with the Thinga-ma-greeter as they visited Portland Children’s Museum since our move to Washington Park in 2001.

What do they have in common? All were invented by kids! Join us today, on Kid Inventors Day, and everyday this month as we celebrate the ingenuity of children as inventors. Every day of the week we’ll experiment with materials and collaborate in art exploration. This month is generously sponsored by ESCO Foundation. •
