Mind in The Making

How do children learn? What do they need to learn? What does the research say?

The experiences and environments within Portland Children's Museum exhibits, studios, and classrooms are designed to support the Seven Essential Skills described by Ellen Galinsky in her book, Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs (HarperCollins, 2010).

In her groundbreaking book, Ellen Galinsky outlines the seven critical areas that children need most: 1) focus and self control; 2) perspective taking; 3) communicating; 4) making connections; 5) critical thinking; 6) taking on challenges; and 7) self-directed, engaged learning.
