This four-day event includes visits to Opal School PK – 5th grade classrooms in session, a visit to the Wonder of Learning exhibit from Reggio Emilia, Italy, and a curriculum mapping workshop with Louise Cadwell. You may register for each event separately, or attend all events.

Visit the Opal School classrooms to observe instructional approaches and inquiry-based learning through the arts and sciences. Hear from Opal School staff on approaches to teaching and learning that invite playful inquiry into the classroom to challenge and engage young minds. Observe Opal School’s approach to using the Oregon State Standards as provocations for in-depth investigations of an interest. Join conversations with Opal teachers about the joys and challenges of a practice that holds a strong image of children as thinkers, planners and contributors to the wider community. Opal School’s approaches to teaching mathematics will be featured as well as approaches to integrating project work and content areas.

February 16, 2012 9am–3pm

Spend the morning with Opal School teacher researchers exploring The Wonder of Learning exhibit from Reggio Emilia, Italy. Spend the afternoon in guided reflection to uncover and make meaning of the exhibit's messages while addressing the questions: How can our teaching practice support a richer conception of social constructivism? What obstacles do we face and how can we overcome them?
Professional Development on the Oregon Registry: Approved for 5 clocks hours at the Set Two level.

Planning for Playful Inquiry: Exploring Possibilities for Curriculum Mapping
With Louise Cadwell
How does a school staff create a shared understanding of their work with children and families? What are the structures, strategies and elements that support quality work? How can the process of curriculum mapping uncover big ideas, essential questions, possible experiences, and concepts & skills to support the mission of a school? Louise Cadwell shares her experiences and invites inquiry into these questions.
