Every day in February is dedicated to stories and experiences that encourage love and kindness, foster peace and well-being, and nurture friendship. Join us for daily programming that inspires acts of kindness and inclusion, builds emotional intelligence, and provides opportunities to seek deeper connections to those around us. Red Yarn 
February 2, 11 a.m. in the Theater
Red Yarn, Andy Furgeson, is a dynamic family performer and teaching artist in Portland, Oregon. He weaves folksongs and puppetry into engaging shows for all ages. With his energetic performances and lush recordings, Red Yarn reinvigorates American folklore for younger generations.

Let’s Bee Friends: presented by Bee & Bloom
February 2, 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the East Studio
Join Bee & Bloom for fun, hands-on learning about bees. In celebration of Peace & Friendship Month, we’ll explore how bees are our friends and how people can be good friends to bees too. Portland Children's Museum is proud to partner with Bee & Bloom, an education apiary and online resource shining a light on pollinators, sustainability and natural wellness.

Penny's Puppets
February 7, 11 a.m. in the Theater
Join us for a joyful live performance that use puppets, story, and song to ignite the imagination and fill the Theater with excitement and laughter. Penny's Puppet Productions is a professional one-woman puppet company dedicated to making the world a better place, one puppet show at a time!​

From the Early Childhood Exploration classroom at Portland Children’s Museum, this six-week series will provide little learners and their adults with a unique Museum experience filled with fun! Designed for 2-3 year olds and their caregivers, each hour-long class in the series has a different theme and features play, songs, stories, movement activities, museum exhibit visits, and art and science explorations. Early Explorers will create handcrafted treasures to take home, make new friends, and experience the Museum in a whole new way.

Class price does not include Museum admission. Drop-in and single-class purchases are not available at this time. All personal absences are non-refundable.

Micah and Me Toddler Dance Party
February 9, 11 a.m. in the Theater
Come dance and sing along with Micah And Me! Micah And Me host toddler dance parties regularly throughout the Portland Metro area. They have been featured on KOIN 6 News and have had their name on the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall marquee for a special show! They have an uncommon ability to connect with those young at heart!

Tết Festival Activities
February 9 & 24, 10 – 11:30 a.m. in the Voyage to Vietnam Exhibit
Come celebrate the Vietnamese festival of Tết at Portland Children's Museum. Join us for activities, explore the new exhibit, Voyage to Vietnam: Celebrating the Tết Festival, and engage with students from the International Cultural Service Program (ICSP) at Portland State University as they share their culture, from history and folklore to pop culture and their favorite holiday traditions.

PapaHugs
February 10, 11 a.m. in the Theater
David Sharpe, or as his fans call him “PapaHugs” has been playing guitar and creating music for over 20 years. His children and grandchildren are his biggest inspiration in the creation of his original children’s music. Join the PapaHugs Band and the PapaHugs Playtime Characters, Wonder The Kangaroo, Scary bug, Robbie The Robot, Fitness the Frog, and Stinky Beetle for a music experience that will get the whole family dancing.

Tender Table: Stories About Food, Family, Identity
February 10, 10 a.m. – Noon in the Voyage to Vietnam Exhibit
Explore art, food, and culture from Vietnam through stories and artist-led activities to celebrate the opening of Voyage to Vietnam: Celebrating the Tết Festival. Get your passport and travel from activity to activity to learn about the delicious fruits found in Vietnam, tell stories with your own Zodiac puppet, create a lantern or paper flower, and discover why apricot and peach blossoms are significant during the celebration of Tết. Portland Children's Museum is proud to collaborate with Vietnamese artists from Tender Table, Anna Vo, Teresa Nguyen, Vy Pham, and Stacey Tran, who are eager to share their joyful experiences celebrating Tết as children through art and stories.

Artist Bios: 

  • Anna Vo is an audio engineer, musician, writer, social justice educator, zine editor and illustrator. They also draw comics, dance weird, tell fortunes, and make goofy jokes. They/theirs, ACAB, APOC. 
  • Teresa Nguyen is a mixed non-binary first-generation Viet-Am tenderqueer. They believe every available art medium is a tool for documenting experience, even if no one ever sees it.  
  • Vy Pham is a 1.5 generation immigrant with roots in Vietnam, New England, Colorado, and now Portland—sometimes writer, sometimes radio contributor, always student, and presently community-oriented Master of Social Work candidate. 
  • Stacey Tran is a writer from Portland, OR. She curates Tender Table, a storytelling series about food, family, identity. Her first full-length book, Soap for the Dogs, is forthcoming from Gramma (Spring 2018). 

Vietnamese New Year and Tet Holiday Celebration

  • White Lotus Dragon & Lion Dance
    February 16, 11 a.m. in the Theater
    White Lotus Dragon & Lion Dance is dedicated to being the iconic team that is able to bring the art of dragon and lion dance to the Pacific Northwest in its purest form.
  • Dragon Pop-up Collaborative
    February 17, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. in the East Studio
    Help us build a giant dragon using recycled materials to celebrate the Tet holiday. Pop-up Collaboratives are a celebration of child-directed play, stocked with different materials (such as cardboard boxes, tape, and string) and welcomes people of all ages and abilities to play and create together.
  • Tieng Hoai Huong Ensemble
    February 18, 11 a.m. in the Theater
    Tieng Hoai Huong Ensemble is dedicated to the study and performance of Traditional Vietnamese Music in the Portland, Oregon area. Rhythm instruments will be available for guests to join in!

Bilingual Storytime: Vietnamese + English
February 22, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the Voyage to Vietnam Exhibit

Come listen to classic and beloved stories from Vietnam read in Vietnamese and English, followed by time-honored art making activities. Portland Children’s Museum is proud to partner with librarians from Multnomah County Library for this special bilingual Storytime series in celebration of the exhibit Voyage to Vietnam.

Storytime
11 a.m. & 2 p.m. in the Treehouse
Gather round for Storytime at Portland Children’s Museum. Storytime features children’s books enjoyed by children of all ages and their caregivers read aloud by Museum Staff. Not only is Storytime fun, reading aloud with children enhances their language proficiency, communication, and listening skills. Reading stories out loud together can also help children create real world connections, prepare them for academic success, and support their imagination and creativity.

Peace Corner
9 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the Field Station
Visit our Peace Corner, a quiet space full of objects that inspire calm feelings and peaceful thoughts.


MONDAYS

Advanced Tool Time
10 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the Maker Studio
Learn to safely use saws, drills, and other exciting tools to design and build your own projects from recycled materials. Join us for advanced tinkering and building activities facilitated by our Maker Space Specialist, Mike. All ages are welcome!

Pottery Glazing
11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Wonder Corner
Glaze your own ceramic creation or choose from a variety of pre-made pieces. After glazing, the Museum fires your ceramic piece in our kiln, which causes the glazes to harden and change color so they are darker, brighter, and very shiny. Now your masterpiece is food safe and waterproof too. Prices start at $3 for pre-made pieces. Price includes piece, glazing, and firing. If you are glazing your own creation, the cost to glaze will be the same cost as it was to fire. Glazed pieces are available for pick up one week after creation.

Silly STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math)
1:30 – 3 p.m. in the Field Station
Join Amy for a morning of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) for little ones. This program features hands-on activities to help develop skills in pre-writing, sorting, counting, matching, and measuring.


TUESDAYS

Silly STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math)
9:30 – 11 a.m. in the Field Station
Join Amy for a morning of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) for little ones. This program features hands-on activities to help develop skills in pre-writing, sorting, counting, matching, and measuring.

Paper Flowers
1 – 3 p.m. in the East Studio
Make a flower bouquet for someone special in your life. Learn different techniques for making flowers out of paper, from big tissue paper marigolds to simple origami roses.


WEDNESDAYS

Succulent Fairy Gardens
10 a.m. – Noon in the Wonder Corner
Create a beautiful home for a new plant friend and decorate it with tiny garden features that fairies like best. Learn about your new plant - a succulent - from Jered and how to care for your fairy garden at home.
*$5 materials fee

Shaving Cream Peace Painting
12:30 - 2:30 p.m. in the East Studio
Spread peace, love, and paint! Join Meg for a colorful sensory experience as we use our hands to get messy and paint a shaving cream mural.


THURSDAYS

Gentle Music for Babies and Pre-toddlers with Mr. Ben
10 -11 a.m. in the Treehouse
Music is magic for children’s cognitive development, lighting up different regions of their rapidly developing brains in ways that nothing else does.  Partnering with the Portland Children’s museum, Mr. Ben brings his music directly to the younger set. His songs and the energy of the show are geared towards babies in arms, pre-toddlers, and children of any age that engage with calmer energy.

Amazing Glazing
10 a.m. – Noon in the Wonder Corner
Join Dew Anna for ceramic painting fun! We offer a variety of pre-made pottery items and a colorful array of glazes for decorating. *Glazed creations ready for pick-up one week after glazing. Fee for materials apply.

Friendship Cards
1 – 3 p.m. in the Wonder Corner
Whether you need invisible ink to write a secret message or sparkly paint to express your love, we’ve got you covered for Valentine’s Day and all month long! Visit the Wonder Corner to create outstanding friendship cards for all the people you care about.

Color Mixing Water Play
10 a.m. – Noon in the East Studio
Explore the magic of mixing colors in water. Join Max in this entrancing activity that helps build fine motor skills and supports learning about colors and liquid dilution.

Ribbon Dancing
1:30 - 2:30 p.m. in the Theater
Will your ribbon fly in the sky or be like a fish swimming in a low stream? Come listen to music and explore movement with ribbon wands!
