February 5, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Learn how puppies become service animals and see their training in action at Portland Children's Museum! The Autism Service Dogs of America (ASDA) has 18-20 service dogs in training each year and places dogs to be service animals for children impacted by Autism. It takes hard work, focus, and lots of practice for these special dogs to learn everything they need to know. Portland Children's Museum is proud to partner with ASDA to provide these puppies and their trainers a space to learn, train, and interact with people of all ages and sizes. Here are some important things to know when you see these dogs and their trainers at the Museum today:
- These puppies are cute and cuddly, but please remember they are working and shouldn't be touched.
- ASDA will have a greeting station for people to greet some of the service dogs in training. This will be structured and will require lots of gentleness and calm.
- If you are given permission to greet a service dog in training, be very gentle and calm.
- Help the service dogs in training be successful by giving them space to do their jobs.
If you have questions, ask a designated ASDA contact who will be wearing a green ASDA shirt.
