Outdoor Activity Month is designed to encourage physical activity and play in the great outdoors, which are essential components of healthy child development. Every day of the week will feature different programs or special guests in Outdoor Adventure, our 1.3 acre nature play exhibit, which will inspire you to move your body, discover beauty in unexpected places, and explore the wilder side of Portland Children’s Museum!


SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Micah & Me
Friday, August 11, 11 a.m. in the Theater
Come dance and sing along with Micah & Me! Micah & Me host toddler dance parties regularly throughout the Portland Metro area and they have an uncommon ability to connect with those young at heart!

UN International Youth Day: Youth Building Peace
Saturday, August 12, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
The United Nations International Youth Day 2017 celebrates young people’s efforts towards conflict prevention and transformation, inclusion, social justice, and sustainable peace. The Museum is proud to host a series of community-inspired activities to bring awareness to this important day.

Ukulele Class: Play Along, Sing Along, Dance Along
Sunday, August 13, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. in the Theater
Come learn the ukulele at Portland Children's Museum. Play along with and encourage your little ones to explore the ukulele, experience rhythm and dance with percussion instruments and scarves, and watch them take the stage. We welcome experienced ukulele players as well as brand new beginners. Taught by Aaron from the band Micah & Me. Bring the entire family for a musical adventure!

Cost: $15 per family*, Space is limited, register online

Red Yarn

Red Yarn, Andy Furgeson, is a dynamic family performer and teaching artist in Portland, Oregon. He weaves folksongs and puppetry into engaging shows for all ages. With his energetic performances and lush recordings, Red Yarn reinvigorates American folklore for younger generations

Sign Language, Music, & Movement Classes Presented by Tiny Talkers 
Friday, August 18

  • 10:15 a.m. - 11 a.m. Music, Movement & Singing for preschoolers (ages 2-5)                                                                                             Little movers and shakers ages 2-5 and their caregivers will sing, dance, hear stories and learn some sign language in this lively interactive class.  
  • 11:15 a.m. - Noon Sign, Sing & Play (ages 9 months - 2.5 years)                                                                                                                   Sign language, music, and movement class for ages 9 months to 2.5 years and their caregivers.

Solar Eclipse Viewing Party: Space Celebration Day
Monday, August 21, 9 a.m.– 1 p.m.
Bring your friends to watch the 2017 solar eclipse at Portland Children’s Museum! Special solar eclipse glasses will be provided to those who want to enjoy this rare sight from the Patio. Come early and stay after the big event to play and learn about outer space through a variety of art, science, and sensory activities.

Bring the whole family for a day of physical activity and fun for everyone outdoors. Put your agility to the test with tree climbing, make new friends playing giant parachute games, create a victory medal, and much more!

CLAY WORKSHOP: Terra Cotta Pots
Sunday, August 26, 9:15 a.m.–10:45 a.m. in they Clay Studio
Children and caregivers will work together to create a unique pot for flowers and plants out of traditional red clay. Learn techniques for coil pots, pinch pots, and slab construction, and then choose the best method for your project. These projects will be fired but not glazed. Unglazed terra cotta is very porous, allowing it to breathe and absorb water to keep your plant hydrated and healthy. With exclusive access to the Clay Studio, don’t miss this special opportunity to play, make, and share at Portland Children’s Museum

All materials included. Dress to mess. Pieces will be ready to pick up 2 weeks after the workshop. (Plants not included)

EVERYDAY

Story Time
11 a.m. & 2 p.m. in the Treehouse
Gather round for Story Time at Portland Children’s Museum. Story Time features children’s books enjoyed by children of all ages and their caregivers read aloud by Museum Staff. Not only is Story Time fun, reading aloud with children enhances their language proficiency, communication, and listening skills. Reading stories out loud together can also help children create real world connections, prepare them for academic success, and supports their imagination and creativity. 

Butterfly Painting Metamorphosis 
10 a.m. – 4 p.m. in Outdoor Adventure
Head to Outdoor Adventure and help us paint our family of giant butterflies a different color each day!

Mud Kitchen
10 a.m. – 5 p.m. in Outdoor Adventure
Cook up some messy fun in our outdoor kitchen! We invite you to measure, pour, slice, squish, and play with dirt, water, and our favorite tools from the kitchen. Sensory play supports language development, fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction.

Friends of the Children School Supply Drive
August 1-20, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the Museum Lobby
Make a difference in the lives of youth and help them to feel empowered as they start the new school year. Our hope is that every youth will start the school year prepared for success. Drop off new school supplies at the front desk of Portland Children's Museum between 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.


MONDAYS

Maker Monday 
11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the Maker Studio
Gather together to play, make, and share in our one-of-a-kind space that promotes critical thinking, innovation, and safe risk-taking. Guided by our Maker Space Specialist, each week we’ll make something new - so don’t miss Monday afternoons in the Maker Studio! 

Landscape Painting
1:30 – 2:30 p.m. in the Wonder Corner
Get inspired by beauty in nature with Grace! Experiment with color and shape to represent the natural landscape using finger paint.


TUESDAYS

Magnetic Fishing
11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in Outdoor Adventure
Practice your casting and see how many fish you can catch with Max in our Outdoor Adventure exhibit. This activity promotes collaboration and helps build eye-hand coordination. 

Pinwheels
12:30 – 1:30 p.m. in Outdoor Adventure
Create a one-of-a-kind pinwheel with Leslie and then frolic through the fields of Outdoor Adventure to discover a new way to play with the wind.


WEDNESDAYS

Silly STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math)
10 a.m. - Noon in Outdoor the Field Station
Join Amy for a morning of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) for little ones. This program features hands-on activities to help develop skills in pre-writing, sorting, counting, matching, and measuring. 

Hop, Stop, Dancing, Prancing Story Time
11 a.m. in the Theater
Come move and shake at this special story time for little ones. Join Zac for this dynamic and playful program that encourages self-expression and explores stories and movement as tools for learning. All ages and abilities are encouraged to participate!


THURSDAYS

Gentle Music for Babies and Pre-Toddlers with Mr. Ben 
10:30 a.m. & 11:30 a.m. in the Treehouse
Music is magic for children’s cognitive development, lighting up different regions of their rapidly developing brains in ways that nothing else does.  Partnering with the Portland Children’s museum, Mr. Ben brings his music directly to the younger set. His songs and the energy of the show are geared towards babies in arms, pre-toddlers, and children of any age that engage with calmer energy.  

Mural Painting in the Park
10:30 – 11:30 a.m. in Outdoor Adventure
Join Dew Anna for mural painting outdoors in our beautiful Outdoor Adventure exhibit.

Archery
1 - 2 p.m. in Outdoor Adventure
Bring your adventurous spirit and practice using a bow and arrow to hit a target with Emlyn.


FRIDAYS

Super Bubbles
Noon- 1 p.m. in Outdoor Adventure
Have you ever been inside a giant bubble? Here is your chance! Come play with bubbles of all shapes and sizes and learn from Liz how to make different kinds of bubble wands.


SATURDAYS

Tie-dye
11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in Two Potato
Mix and swirl colors to make your own fabulous tie-dye t-shirt. Bring a shirt from home to tie-dye, or pick-up one at the Museum from our tie-dye specialist, Nathan.

Stomp Rockets
10:30  – 11:30 a.m. in Outdoor Adventure
Initiate countdown, jump, and... BLAST OFF! Use your body to send rockets high up in the air in Outdoor Adventure with Meg and Jason. 

Kite Making
1 – 2 p.m. in Outdoor Adventure
Build your own colorful kite with Jasmine. Learn about different kite shapes and what makes them fly, then experiment with your own creative design.
